The Super hoopla has passed for another year.
Even for a fan of the NFL, FINALLY!
What began in earnest in July and August during the respective training camps, then progressed through the regular season from Labor Day through December, transitioned into Season Two in January during the playoffs, finally culminated with the Seattle Seahawks crushing the favored Denver Broncos, 43-8, for the title of Super Bowl Champions.
From the opening play, how do you spell NO CONTEST?
Did anyone get to experience the $900,000 luxury boxes as one of thirty guests per box (do the math, that’s $30K a pop for those seats!)?
Or did you go the “cheap” route and have to settle for the average ticket priced at $2,500?
The build up to the big game, the game itself, the half-time show, and yes, the Super Bowl commercials are now fading on the grid-iron horizon for another year.
The National Football League will soon give way to college basketball’s March Madness and then to spring training for Major League Baseball, followed closely by the quest for Lord Stanley’s cup, the National Hockey League championship.
However, let’s let football linger for a few more moments.
What intrigued me the most was a post-game interview of Russell Wilson, the 2nd year quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks. He has a 24-8 regular season record in his first two seasons, most of all time. He has now won a Super Bowl title as well.
Not bad for a kid who wasn’t supposed to be the starting quarterback and earned the job last season.
In addition to his minimal league tenure, Russell stands 5’11” as a quarterback in a league where most quarterbacks are 6’0” to 6’-5”, a desired quality to be able to throw over the big goons trying to get to the passer at any given time.
In the interview, he was being questioned on whether he could succeed in the league. He cites words of inspiration his late father used to motivate him.
“My dad always used to kind of tap me and say, ‘Hey, why not you? Why can’t you be a world champion or whatever you want to be?” Wilson said.
“So I told the guys, ‘Why not us?’ ”
His words are not only the mark of a champion, but also are the words of a leader!
He created the realm of possibility by looking in the mirror, posing a question, and then spoke toward his desired end!
Good stuff!
He also added, “God is so good. He has brought me a mighty long way…it’s kind of surreal…being a World Champion…I’m so thankful!”
The question I pose to myself, is the same question I also pose to you.
“Hey, why not you?”
Unless you are playing organized sports at a high level, I am willing to dismiss the idea of “Why can’t you be a world champion?” It’s not out of the realm of possibility. It simply is a matter of where most of us are living our day to day existence.
However, “Why can’t you be…whatever you want to be?”
Give yourself permission to dream a little, invite the starting point. You never know where you might end up.
-
Open the tap.
-
Allow the water to freely flow.
-
See the possibilities.
- Follow your passions as well as your skills.
- You can be whatever you want to be!
One of my favorite verses hits the nail on the head.
“God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us”. Ephesians 3:20-21 (The Message)I dare you to look in the mirror, to open your mouth, and to ask yourself the question:
“Why not you?”
What possibilities might be activated in your life by asking the question?
(HINT: Again, ask the question!)
Awesome Bruce! Absolutely, why not me, why not you is right!! Great quote from that quarterback – full of God’s faith.
Ann – thanks for the kind words. God has more in store for all of us….if we simply take Him at His word!!
Why not me?!?! Let’s go God!!! Love it….
Jim – keeping asking the question WHY NOT YOU? You are a BELOVED Son!!
