Remember Who You Are

Do any of you recall lazy Saturday mornings growing up as a kid?

  • Your eyelids lifted gently to the light of day when you awoke versus when you had to get up, as in going to school.
  • Perhaps the smell of breakfast cooking invited you to emerge from your bed to come downstairs, still in your PJ’s, sleepy eyes and all.
  • Your Mom or Dad greeted you, you chowed down, and then you were off to watch your favorite cartoons for a little while.

The life of a child, those were the days!  More cartoon talk in a moment.

We have started a really interesting personal and congregational adventure at our church this past week, one that will continue for the next several months.

In this adventure the foundation has been set and we have learned:

  • You are blessed of the Lord,
  • Who is the maker of heaven and earth
  • The heavens, indeed the heavens belong to the Lord.
  • The earth He has given to the children of men.

The reference, in case you are interested, is Psalms 115: 15-16.

The adventure is not about “Thee’s”, “Thou’s”, and “Praise the Lord’s”.

It as an adventure based on personal exploration.  An adventure meant to pose the questions:

  • Why am I here?
  • What is my purpose?
  • What role do I have to play?
  • How can I make a difference in my sphere of influence while I am on this earth?

Back to the cartoons – this morning we got to view a couple of films clips from Disney’s, The Lion King.  It felt like being a kid all over again.

My mind rocketed back to July 8, 2008 and a talk I heard my favorite speaker, Lance Wallnau, give.

He too showed a clip from The Lion King, the same clip included with this post.

I have listened to that talk dozens of times since.  When I listen, it is as if I am there all over again.  It was a turning point in my life.  Word nuggets being spoken to which I could relate.  Words that affected a change in me at a deep, deep level.

  • I had to peer into the waters to see beyond my own reflection and acknowledge the reflection of One much greater than myself (or my current problem).
  • I came to the realization that I forgotten my heritage, the roots of my Destiny.
  • I had to address the fact that I was “more than what I had become”.
  • I had to remember like Simba, that my Father lives in me and I am his son, “I am the one true king”.
  • He gave me a position of ruling and reigning over the places and callings which are mine alone.
  • I must take my place in the Circle of Life.

Enough of the Disney hogwash you might think.  Fair enough.

However, your past does not define you.

Your failures are broken pieces of glass comprising the mosaic called You, necessary pieces in the work of art you are.

You may relate to the words “you are more than you have become”.  So be it.  Here is a poignant reminder meant just for you:

  • You have a purpose on this earth.
  • It is yours and yours alone to fulfill.
  • You must step into your rightful place for you are a king or a queen meant to rule your domain.
  • For the earth has been given to the children of men.
  • That means you.
  • Rule your domain well!

By the way, Hakuna Matata!
