Selfie

Selfie

Mr. Webster never, ever envisioned the boat load of words which have made it past the security gates and into his dictionary.

  • Gigabyte – a measure of storage capacity equal to 230 (1024) bytes.
  • Computer – an electronic device designed to accept data, perform prescribed mathematical and logical operations at high speed and display the results of these operations.
  • Headshot – a photograph of someone’s face, especially a promotional photograph of a model, actor, or author.
  • Smartphone – a device that combines a cell phone with a hand-held computer, typically offering Internet access, data storage, email capability, etc.
  • Email – a system for sending messages from one individual to another via telecommunications links between computers or terminals.

In looking at the brief list shown above you can see where this is going – it’s like a cat chasing its tail!

Noah may have opted for another profession or interest given the ever expanding lexicon laden with out of this world terms to consider.

I’d like to interject one more word making the rounds these days – Selfie.

Selfie is defined as such – a photograph that one takes of oneself with a digital camera (More words to define!) or a front-facing smartphone (At least we covered that one!), tablet (Is this paper?) or webcam (Here we go again!) especially for posting on a social networking (Did someone get invited to a party?) or photo sharing website (Does this pertain to spiders?)

Do you think Noah might have opted to pack it in and call it a day?

Maybe.

Maybe not.

One more definition of Selfie can be added – it is now a TV show as well.

If you care to check out the premise of the show you can do so here.

In the current season of “waiting to be employed again” (unemployment is NOT a word in my dictionary!) there are moments where I need to take a break from sitting at my laptop while searching…and searching….and searching for the eventual job.

The weather was a relatively warm 40 degrees and I needed a break.

The great outdoors called my name and enticed me to hop on my bike to get some fresh air.

No problem answering that call!

When I returned from the invigorating ride, I decided to enter Selfie-land and took my own mug shot, my very first Selfie, with none less than my front-facing smartphone.

Rumor has it my four year old granddaughter, Danalyn, thinks I look like a bug.  She might be onto something!

You might also enjoy this Selfie Duet to get you in the mood for the holidays.

It originally debuted on Granddaughter TV!

Something tells me I might be hearing from my better half on sharing this clip!

Before I get too carried away with the whole Selfie thing, there is a hint of something in the word which goes against my grain.

It reminds me of someone who might be selfish (devoted to or caring only for oneself; concerned primarily with one’s own interests, benefits, welfare, etc., regardless of others).

Here are some words on which to chew.

“Don’t be selfish and don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others too.” Philippians 2:3-4 (NLT)

How can we put this simple advice into practice?

When we open our eyes and our hearts the opportunities are endless!

  • Add a buck or two or more to your bill at the grocery checkout line to be given to the food bank.
  • Try your hand at cooking dinner or doing the laundry if you are not the one who normally handles those duties.
  • Allow another to speak first and actively listen.
  • Practice what it means to understand another person without interjecting your two cents.
  • Consider giving someone less fortunate a gift this Christmas.
  • Volunteer – anywhere!

Feel free to Selfie yourself on every social networking site known to man.

Better yet.

Experience the joy of giving of yourself to another in whatever form it may take.

This truly is the season where we sayit is more blessed to give than receive”  .

Let’s back it up with our actions!

How can you swing the pendulum to be more selfless than a Selfie?

  1. Bruce I LOVE your take on selfie and focusing on giving of ourselves especially in this season where One gave His all to us! PS I love the video!!! You both sing a lot better than I do.
